چکیده

This study analyzes the interaction patterns and knowledge construction process students used when discussing course-related content through asynchronous online discussions. Data included the outline of postings and transcripts of online messages from several group discussions in two educational psychology classes. Quantitative analysis included participation and interaction rates; qualitative procedures analyzed patterns of interaction and knowledge construction. Results helped refine a category system of indicators and descriptors that can help educators in assessing student learning in online discussions. Student exchanges showed more clarification, elaboration, and conclusion statements than questions/answers, conflict, negotiation, support or consensus building showing more self-reflective monologues than dialogical interactions. Implications for teaching and further research are discussed.
